Mission Impulsable – MS Society

Mission Impulsable is a room escape game we created as a team of three. The game is developed on Unity. For national MS society, our game aims to introduce the disease, multiple sclerosis, to the player, most of them would be children, so the information we convey should be clear, interesting, and easy to be understood. I decide to create a character, an animated electron in a nerve cell, and its mission is to travel to the nerve ending to make an electric pulse. However, because of the multiple sclerosis, the journey would not be easy, and the player needed to solve different puzzles to reach the end. When they are playing the game, they would gradually understand how this disease happen in human body and we could introduce how to avoid and treat them in the end.

Art Design

Procreate

The project was developed before I learn 3D modeling, and the scene and story we were going to present was quite unique, so there were few assets that met our requirements. Therefore, I decided to create assets by drawing. All of the assets presented are original and created by Procreate on iPad.

Character

The avatar, main character controlled by the player, is an anthropomorphic electron. Animation included the floating, tail movement, direction changes, shadows size, and lightning around the character.

Story

As an escape room puzzle game, the clues and introductions are limited, and the players are required to find out on their own. Some background information is provided through conversation blocks, triggered by interacting with objects or entering new room as the player makes progress.

Player Control

With the basic W, A, S, D movement controller, E trigger the interaction with other objects. Some puzzles required mouse control and number input, but the control is fairly intuitive.

Levels Design

The puzzles are fairly simple since the target players are children. Most importantly, the puzzles should correspond to the theme of the game – multiple sclerosis. The puzzles imitate what is going on in the nerve cells with the disease and the goal is to fix the damage and reach the destination.
